Nathon is Koh Samui's administrative centre and main ferry port, sitting on the west coast facing the mainland. It's where the big vehicle ferries from Donsak (Surat Thani) arrive, making it the only entry point for travellers bringing their own cars or motorbikes to the island. Nathon is also where the local government offices, immigration, and most of the real (non-tourist) infrastructure cluster.

As a travel destination, Nathon is low-key — there's a small Chinese-influenced old town along Thaweeratphakdee Road, a few local restaurants, a night market, and the main ferry terminal. Most tourists only pass through on arrival or departure. But Nathon's **west-facing sunsets** are the best on Samui, and the seafront has become a quiet locals' sunset hangout that's worth a visit even if you're staying elsewhere.

A scooter is essential for any meaningful Nathon experience — the town stretches along the coast and there's no reason to stay in one spot. From Nathon, the ring road runs north to Maenam and Bophut (30 min) or south to Lamai via the quieter south-coast section (45 min).
